Incheon Metropolitan City said on the 12th that it held a groundbreaking ceremony for the Geyang–Ganghwa Expressway construction project.
The expressway is a metropolitan arterial road network connecting Geyang District in Incheon, to Seogu's Geomdan, to Ganghwa County. It will extend 29.9 kilometers in total and be built as a four-lane, bidirectional road. The total project cost is 3.2629 trillion won.
It is a national project led by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and Korea Expressway Corporation (KEC), with completion targeted for 2032.
The city said that when the project is completed, the northern part of Incheon—including Ganghwa, Geomdan and Geyang—which has had relatively poor traffic conditions, will be linked into a single metropolitan transportation axis, improving interregional accessibility.
The city also noted it expects the project to help improve traffic flow in the greater Seoul area. It said the road will respond to rising traffic demand from second-phase new town developments such as Geomdan New Town and will establish a metropolitan arterial road network connected to the first and second Capital Area Ring Expressways.
Jang Cheol-bae, head of Incheon's Transportation Bureau, said, "We will work closely with related agencies to ensure this expressway construction project proceeds without a hitch."
