Police have launched an investigation into allegations that virtual assets secured by the National Tax Service during the asset seizure process were stolen.
According to police on the 28th, the Cyber Terror Response Unit of the Korean National Police Agency received a request for an investigation from the National Tax Service the day before and began a pre-booking inquiry (internal probe) into the case.
On the 26th, the National Tax Service accidentally disclosed the "mnemonic" of a virtual asset cold wallet while distributing a press release promoting the collection of delinquent taxes.
A mnemonic is a key combination of words that can restore a virtual asset wallet. With that information alone, one can access the wallet, so it is effectively called a "master key."
After the leak, claims emerged from Blockchain transaction records that about $4.8 million (about 6.9 billion won) in virtual assets were stolen.
Police are checking whether the theft actually occurred and how, based on the movement paths of the virtual assets and transaction records.
