Police currently investigating the second son of independent lawmaker Kim Byung-kee (former floor leader of the Democratic Party of Korea) over alleged "job solicitation" and "intervention in preferential transfer to Soongsil University" summoned the lawmaker's son.
The Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency's Public Crime Investigation Unit said on the 25th that it called in the lawmaker's second son for questioning as a suspect on charges of obstruction of business.
The lawmaker's second son is suspected of receiving preferential treatment in the process of transferring into Soongsil University's Department of Innovation Management in early 2023.
According to statements from the lawmaker's former aides, the lawmaker, introduced by closest confidant Lee Ji-hee, a Dongjak District council member, visited Soongsil University in late 2021 and personally raised the topic of transfer with the president.
Afterward, Council member Lee and the aides were briefed on transferring into a contract department that required employment at a company, and the core allegation is that the lawmaker arranged a dubious hire for the second son at a mid-sized company to meet that condition and ultimately secured his transfer to Soongsil University.
The lawmaker's second son is also suspected of having received preferential hiring at the virtual asset exchange Bithumb. In connection with this, police conducted searches and seizures at Bithumb's headquarters and other locations the day before.
As police plan to summon and question the lawmaker over two days on the 26th and 27th, they are expected to verify the facts related to the allegations with the lawmaker's second son on this day.
