The main blaze of a wildfire in Miryang, South Gyeongsang Province, was brought under control in about 20 hours.
As of 12:30 p.m. on the 24th, the wildfire containment rate in Miryang reached 100%, according to forest authorities. There were no casualties. However, more than 100 people, including residents of six villages near the wildfire site and patients from a convalescent hospital, evacuated.
The affected area was estimated at 143 hectares (ha), roughly the size of about 200 soccer fields.
The wildfire broke out around 4:10 p.m. on the 23rd on a low mountain in Geomse-ri, Samnangjin-eup, Miryang. As strong winds spread the flames quickly, forest and fire authorities worked through the night to keep the fire line from widening.
The flames were gradually contained after 52 helicopters and 318 pieces of equipment were deployed in the morning. Rain also helped significantly.
Forest and fire authorities plan to mop up remaining embers and determine the exact cause of the fire and the extent of the damage.
