A 100-don gold bracelet found in the Sapaesan Tunnel in Uijeongbu, Gyeonggi, was returned to its owner.
According to police on the 24th, in Dec. last year a man found a gold bracelet made of 100 don in the Sapaesan Tunnel in Uijeongbu and reported it to police. Based on current market prices, the bracelet is worth about 1 billion won.
Police who received the report conducted a wide-ranging review to find the owner, checking for a loss report and any links to crime. During this process, a man came forward claiming ownership of the bracelet.
The man told police that during a drive, a marital argument broke out and, in anger, he threw the bracelet out the car window. He was said to have later filed a loss report with the Incheon Metropolitan Police Agency and the National Land Management Office.
To verify that the man was the actual owner, police traced small letters engraved on the bracelet, identified the jewelry shop in Jongno-gu, Seoul, that sold it, and checked purchase records.
As a result of the investigation, police determined the man was the rightful owner and returned the 100-don gold bracelet on the 19th.
Under the Lost Articles Act, the person who first found and reported the bracelet is entitled to a reward ranging from 5% to 20% of the item's value. The amount is decided by agreement between the owner and the finder.
A police official said, "We tracked the small letters engraved on the bracelet to find the seller and, after detailed checks such as verifying the purchase, confirmed the actual owner," adding, "Because the reward is a civil matter, the two parties must resolve it by agreement."
