A wildfire that broke out in Miryang, South Gyeongsang Province, has continued for a second day.
As of 5 a.m. on the 24th, the wildfire containment rate in Miryang was 51%, according to forest authorities. Strong winds and dry weather coincided, and helicopters could not fly at night, so the blaze has not yet been brought under control.
In response, a "wildfire spread response level 2" was issued from 2 a.m. Level 2 is declared when the affected area is 100 hectares or more, when the average wind speed is 11 meters per second or higher, or when the time required for containment is expected to be 48 hours or more.
Forest authorities plan to deploy 31 helicopters at sunrise to fight the main blaze.
The wildfire started at about 4:10 p.m. on the 23rd on a hillside in Geomse-ri, Samrangjin-eup, Miryang. A total of 184 people, including residents of three nearby villages and patients at a convalescent hospital, evacuated.
