Entertainer Jun Hyun-moo, 48, used the slang term "kal-ppang" in a program that covered the story of a police officer who died in the line of duty after being stabbed with a weapon, prompting the National Police Workplace Council (Police Workplace Council) to call for a sincere public apology and self-reflection.
In a statement on the 23rd, the Police Workplace Council said accordingly, "We express deep anger and dismay at the senseless behavior of the cast and production team who demeaned the sacrifice of a public official who died in the line of duty while apprehending a criminal by calling it the vulgar slang 'kal-ppang' and turned it into a source of amusement."
The Police Workplace Council said, "The devotion of a public official who died in the line of duty is a supremely pure value that our society must remember and honor forever," and added, "The broadcast in question shredded the honor of the deceased and drove a nail into the hearts of 140,000 police officers fighting on the front lines."
On Disney+'s "Fate War 49," the cast recently carried out a mission to guess the cause of death of the deceased. "Fate War 49" is a survival program in which a shaman, a Four Pillars of Destiny scholar, a tarot reader, a physiognomist, and others gather to carry out various missions.
The production team disclosed only the photo of the police officer who died in the line of duty, the time of birth, and the time of death, and had them deduce the cause of death. One shaman said, "I first saw a bandage on this person," and added, "Isn't being stabbed with a knife commonly called 'kal-ppang'?"
Jun Hyun-moo, who served as MC, evaluated the accuracy of the cast's deductions about the cause of death and said, "A uniform was worn, and 'kal-ppang.'" Another panelist, Shin Dong, echoed the remark, saying, "I really liked the word (kal-ppang)."
The Police Workplace Council demanded the immediate deletion of the episode in question, saying the mockery of a noble sacrifice should stop at once. It also urged the Korea Communications Standards Commission to impose the highest level of disciplinary action.
The Police Workplace Council said, "We will respond firmly by mobilizing every means so that the honor of heroes in uniform is no longer damaged," and added, "We will fight to the end to build a society where the sacrifice of those who died in the line of duty receives full honor."
