At 4:13:38 a.m. on the 15th, a magnitude 3.0 earthquake struck 4 kilometers north-northeast of Yeoncheon, Gyeonggi Province (Oksan-ri, Yeoncheon-eup).
According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, the epicenter was at 38.13 degrees north latitude and 127.10 degrees east longitude, and the depth was 9 kilometers.
The instrumental intensity for this earthquake was 3 in Yeoncheon, Gyeonggi Province; and 2 in Gimpo, Dongducheon, Paju, and Pocheon in Gyeonggi Province, and Cheorwon in Gangwon Province.
This indicates shaking of the degree that is "noticeable indoors, especially on upper floors of buildings, with parked cars shaking slightly" and "felt only by a few people in a quiet state or on upper floors of buildings."
The earthquake that occurred this time was the strongest in magnitude among those that have struck the Korean Peninsula this year. As of now, there are no reports of damage to facilities or injuries caused by the quake.
There have been eight earthquakes of magnitude 2.0 or higher on the Korean Peninsula and in nearby waters this year. This is the first magnitude 3.0 or higher earthquake this year; the other seven were between magnitude 2.0 and 3.0.
The Korea Meteorological Administration said, "People in areas near the epicenter may feel the tremors," and noted, "Please take care to stay safe."
