Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province, decided to halt the "Pangyo Botdeul Retention Basin complex development project," which it had pursued to build housing for young workers. After a series of opposing views from local residents, the city withdrew the project and chose to keep the existing retention basin as is.
Seongnam said on the 11th that it held a municipal coordination committee meeting on the 10th and decided to stop pushing the Botdeul Retention Basin complex development project and preserve the current retention basin.
The project centered on supplying a total of 646 households, including 342 public sale dwellings and 304 job-linked supportive dwellings, in the area of 667, Sampyeong-dong, Bundang-gu. It also planned to create a public library and a startup center to establish a live-near-work residential environment for workers in Pangyo Techno Valley.
However, there was strong backlash from local residents during the promotion of the project. After the city's project briefing in Oct. last year, collective civil complaints continued, citing concerns over worsening traffic congestion, environmental damage, harm to the urban landscape, and deteriorating residential conditions due to population growth. At a residents' briefing held on Jan. 1, 79 of the 80 attendees reportedly expressed opposition to the project.
Seongnam explained that it decided to halt the project after comprehensively considering that a majority of residents expressed opposition and that conditions had changed, including the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport pushing to create two new public housing districts in the area.
Accordingly, adjustments will be inevitable to some extent to housing supply plans in the Pangyo area and policies supporting housing for young people and workers.
