North Gyeongsang Province said on Feb. 9 it urgently culled 390,000 laying hens that were finally confirmed to have highly pathogenic avian influenza (H5N1).
On the 6th, a suspected case reported at a laying-hen farm in Bonghwa County, North Gyeongsang, was finally confirmed as avian influenza (AI) on the 7th.
Accordingly, the province imposed a temporary 24-hour standstill order on poultry farms and related livestock facilities and vehicles from 12 p.m. on the 7th to 12 p.m. on the 8th.
It also urgently culled 390,000 laying hens at the AI-affected farm and conducted monitoring and thorough testing on 36 dedicated poultry farms (4.63 million birds) within a 10-kilometer control zone.
In addition, for 29 epidemiologically related targets—eight vehicles, 19 farms and two facilities—the province is checking movement restrictions and disinfection conditions and is conducting thorough testing.
Park Chan-guk, director of the Department of Agriculture, Livestock and Distribution of North Gyeongsang Province, said, "Please make every effort to promptly cull livestock at AI-affected farms and prevent further spread."
