Heavy snow fell on Jeju on the 8th, halting operations at Jeju Airport for snow removal. Nearly 100 flights were canceled.
According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, as of 10 a.m. that day, a heavy snow warning was in effect for the mountainous areas of Jeju Island, and a heavy snow advisory was in effect for the rest of Jeju. Snow was expected to continue on Jeju Island through the night. Some areas were seeing around 1 centimeter of snow per hour.
From midnight the previous day to 8 a.m. that day, 20.8 centimeters of snow accumulated at Eorimok in the Jeju highlands. Other snowfall totals were 12.3 centimeters in Gasi-ri, Seogwipo; 9.7 centimeters in Pyoseon, Seogwipo; and 3.5 centimeters in Jeju.
At Jeju Airport, 1.5 centimeters of snow accumulated, and operations were halted for snow removal. Operations were initially suspended until 10 a.m. to clear snow that fell before dawn, but with blizzard conditions persisting, the snow removal time was extended to 11 a.m.
A total of 461 flights were scheduled at Jeju Airport that day, including 226 departures and 235 arrivals. However, with airport operations suspended, 96 flights were canceled and five returned to their origin. Even after operations resume, many flights are expected to be delayed.
Heavy snow fell in Jeju's mountainous areas, and vehicle traffic was restricted on mountain roads including the 1100 Road section from Eoseungsaeng Samgeori to the former Tamradae Sageori, as well as on Route 516, Bijarim-ro and Myeongnim-ro. Snow also piled up on roads in Jeju City, slowing vehicle traffic.
