Coupang said it will withdraw the administrative lawsuit it filed challenging recognition of an industrial accident in the death of a worker at its logistics center.
According to legal sources on the 5th, Coupang the previous day submitted a notice of withdrawal to the Seoul Administrative Court. If the court accepts the withdrawal, the third hearing date, which had been set for March, is not expected to be held.
In June 2024, Coupang filed an administrative lawsuit seeking to overturn the Korea Workers' Compensation & Welfare Service (K-COMWEL)'s decision recognizing the death of a logistics center worker, a person surnamed Choi, as an industrial accident. Choi had handled product sorting and loading at a Coupang logistics center starting in early Oct. 2020 and was found dead at home about six months after starting work.
The Korea Workers' Compensation & Welfare Service (K-COMWEL) recognized the case as an industrial accident, determining that even with a chronic illness such as hyperlipidemia, shift work and physically demanding tasks influenced the onset. Coupang filed suit on the grounds that the agency initially denied the claim but changed its conclusion during a reconsideration after the bereaved family's objection, and that there were defects in that procedure.
