In Chungju, North Chungcheong, a woman 34 weeks pregnant could not find an obstetrics and gynecology clinic for delivery in time and ended up giving birth in the ambulance while being transported, news that emerged belatedly.
According to the North Chungcheong Fire Service Headquarters on the 3rd, a report came in at about 8:23 a.m. the previous day from Hoam-dong in Chungju that "the amniotic fluid of a pregnant woman in her 20s, identified as A, had ruptured," and an ambulance crew was dispatched to the scene.
The crew immediately checked several nearby medical institutions, but replies came back that admission was difficult due to a lack of beds. A notification that delivery was possible came about an hour after the report, at 9:28 a.m., with a response from a general hospital in Wonju, Gangwon, about 50 kilometers away, that it could take the patient.
However, A was already close to delivery. It was determined that while being transported by ambulance to the hospital, the baby was delivered in the vehicle at about 9:38 a.m. A then arrived at the hospital at about 10:11 a.m., and both the mother and the newborn were reported to have no major health issues.
