Jeollanam-do and Gwangju Metropolitan City decided to name the unified local government "Jeonnam-Gwangju Special City," with the short form "Gwangju Special City."
They decided not to set up a separate main government complex and to use Gwangju City Hall, the Jeonnam Muan complex, and the Jeonnam eastern region complex in a balanced way.
At the 4th meeting of governors and National Assembly members to review the "Gwangju-Jeonnam special law," held at the National Assembly on the 27th, the governors and lawmakers agreed on these points and said they will disclose the details soon.
Earlier, Gwangju City and Jeonnam Province had reviewed "Gwangju-Jeonnam Special City" and "Jeonnam-Gwangju Special City" as candidate names for the unified local government. They also differed over the location of the main government complex.
As the two local governments have agreed on the name, the Democratic Party of Korea plans to move quickly to introduce a special law. It is expected to be introduced as early as this week. Because the name of a local government goes into the title of the special law, it was the step that needed consensus first in the integration process.
