Brooklyn Beckham (26), the eldest son of soccer star David Beckham, went public about a rift with his parents and effectively declared a severance.
On the 19th (local time), Brooklyn said on his social media (SNS), "My parents keep going to the media and leaking stories about my wife," adding, "I had no choice but to tell the truth about the countless lies."
He said, "I am not being controlled by anyone; for the first time in my life, I am standing up for myself," and claimed, "My parents have controlled the family narrative through the media all their lives."
Brooklyn particularly alleged that around the time of his wedding, his parents tried to damage his relationship with his wife, Nicola Peltz. He said, "There has never been a time, from before the wedding until now, when attempts to ruin my relationship stopped," and explained that ahead of the 2022 wedding, Victoria Beckham canceled Nicola's wedding dress at the last minute, forcing them to urgently find another dress.
He also revealed that during the wedding preparations in Florida, some family members said, "Nicola is neither blood nor family."
He specifically described what happened on the wedding day. Brooklyn recalled, "Instead of the planned first dance with my wife in front of 500 guests, my mother called me up on stage and did an inappropriate dance," adding, "I have never felt more uncomfortable and humiliated than that day."
Afterward, Brooklyn and Nicola Peltz renewed their vows in Aug. last year, saying, "We wanted to create new memories of joy, not anxiety and shame."
Brooklyn also claimed that just before the wedding, he was pressured by family to sign documents relinquishing rights to his name. He added that after he refused, the family's attitude changed drastically.
He further criticized the family for fixating on public relations and advertising contracts and prioritizing the "Beckham brand." Addressing some views that his wife is controlling him, he countered, "I lived most of my life under my parents' control and suffered from severe anxiety," adding, "Since I created distance from the family, that anxiety has disappeared, and I now feel peace and relief."
He emphasized, "We want peace, privacy and happiness, not image-making, promotion and manipulation."
So far, representatives for David Beckham and Victoria Beckham have not issued an official position on the controversy.
