Wonju in Gangwon Province will grant the honorary road name "Samyang Buldak-ro" to Usan-ro in Usan-dong, where the local flagship corporations Samyang Foods' Wonju plant is located.
According to Wonju on the 20th, "Samyang Buldak-ro" was designated to honor Samyang Foods for contributing to revitalizing the local economy and creating jobs. This is the first honorary road name granted by the city.
The honorary road name was attached to a total 1,963-meter section from 1 to 264 on Usan-ro to commemorate 1963, the year Samyang Ramen, the nation's first instant ramen, was born. However, it is not included in legal addresses, and the official road name for the section remains "Usan-ro" as before.
An honorary road name is an additional name granted to an existing road name to commemorate a person, a historical event, the attraction of corporations, international exchanges, and more.
Samyang Foods is a representative local corporations of Wonju. After creating large-scale grasslands around Daegwallyeong in 1972 to start a dairy business, it placed a plant near Jingwang Middle and High School in Wonju and has grown together with the region. It is evaluated as a corporations that has gone beyond a simple production base to maintain close ties with the local community.
A Wonju city official said, "We hope this granting of an honorary road name will serve as an opportunity to further solidify win-win cooperation between the city and Samyang Foods."
Meanwhile, Samyang Foods posted 2.3788 trillion won in sales last year, showing strong growth from the previous year. As the "Buldak" brand drew attention in the global market, the stock price also rose from the 700,000-won range per share early last year to as high as 1.6 million won at one point. As of the previous day's close, the share price was 1,186,000 won.
