Incheon Metropolitan City said on the 20th that it will expand its civic safety insurance this year.
The Incheon civic safety insurance is a system that pays insurance money to citizens harmed by unexpected dangerous situations to help stabilize their lives. It has been in place since 2019. Citizens registered as residents in Incheon are automatically enrolled, and they can be covered even if they suffer a disaster accident in another region.
There are 16 coverage items this year in total, up two from 14 last year. Newly added coverage includes death and disability from accidents involving personal mobility devices (including PMs and shared mobility). Up to 10 million won is provided per accident. This is to prepare for accidents as PM use increases. According to Korean National Police Agency statistics, PM-related traffic accidents that occurred in Incheon totaled 74 in 2022, 71 in 2023, and 75 in 2024.
The remaining key coverage includes: ▲ death and disability from natural disasters (including heat exhaustion, heatstroke, and hypothermia) ▲ death and disability from explosions, fires, and collapses ▲ death and disability from injuries while using public transportation ▲ death and disability from injuries caused by robbery ▲ medical expenses for injuries from school zone traffic accidents ▲ death and disability from injuries while using chartered buses ▲ emergency room treatment costs for dog bite accidents ▲ death and disability from social disasters. Coverage is available up to 20 million won.
In addition, starting this year, the city included foreign nationals of Korean descent who have filed domestic residence reports as eligible for coverage. As a result, anyone who is an Incheon citizen—including citizens registered in Incheon, registered foreigners, and overseas Koreans—can receive civic safety insurance benefits.
Insurance claims can be filed within three years from the date of the accident or the date of a disability diagnosis. If the victim or the bereaved family of the deceased applies directly to the insurer, the Local Finance Association, the insurance money is paid after review.
Yoon Baek-jin, head of Incheon's Citizens Safety Headquarters, said, "We will continue to do our best to create a safe city where citizens can live with peace of mind, free from various disasters and accidents."
