The funeral Mass and farewell ceremony for the late national actor Ahn Sung-ki will be solemnly held on the 9th at Myeongdong Cathedral in Seoul.
On the 8th, The Korea Film Actors Association said the funeral Mass for the deceased will be held at 8 a.m. on the 9th, the day of the send-off, at Myeongdong Cathedral in Jung-gu, Seoul. It added that the film community's farewell ceremony will follow from 9 a.m. in the cathedral's chapel hall.
Actors Lee Jung-jae and Jung Woo-sung, co-CEOs of the agency Artist Company, along with Lee Byung-hun, Park Chul-min, and other junior colleagues in the film industry, will serve as pallbearers to see the deceased off on the final journey.
At the farewell ceremony, director Bae Chang-ho and actor Jung Woo-sung, who are co-chairs of the funeral committee, will deliver eulogies. After the funeral Mass and farewell ceremony conclude, the deceased will be laid to rest at Byeolgeurida in Yangpyeong, Gyeonggi.
Ahn Sung-ki's baptismal name is John the Apostle, and he was a devout Catholic. In 2014, during Pope Francis' visit to Korea, he read a Scripture passage at the Mass celebrated by the pope at Myeongdong Cathedral.
In the 2022 film "Birth," he played Yu Jin-gil, an interpreter who sends Kim Dae-geon and Choi Yang-eop to study in Macao. He also traveled despite ill health to attend the Vatican screening of "Birth."
After Ahn Sung-ki's passing, Archbishop Chung Soon-taick of the Archdiocese of Seoul said, "We will long remember the sincerity and goodness the actor left through film and life," adding, "We offer deep consolation and solidarity to the bereaved family and all who loved the actor."
