An active-duty police officer was arrested after causing a traffic accident while driving the wrong way on a highway in a state of heavy intoxication.
The Gyeonggi Nambu Provincial Police Agency Highway Patrol said on Jan. 7 that it booked Inspector A, in her 50s, of the Gwangju Police Station in Gyeonggi on suspicion of violating the Road Traffic Act (drunk driving) and is investigating.
A is accused of driving in the wrong direction while intoxicated at about 12:25 a.m. on the 6th near the Heonreung Interchange on the Yongin–Seoul Expressway toward Seoul and crashing into the car of B, a taxi driver in his 70s.
There were no casualties, but A's blood alcohol concentration at the time of the crash was reportedly at the license-revocation level.
A is a police officer with the traffic division of the Gwangju station and is said to have routinely carried out drunk-driving crackdowns and traffic accident investigations.
The Gyeonggi Nambu agency relieved A of duties on the day of the crash and plans to begin an internal probe after completing the accident investigation.
