South Chungcheong Province said on the 2nd it will push a pilot project to install renewable energy by using idle land at public institutions with Samsung Display.

The project aims to expand the supply of renewable energy to corporations by using idle land owned by public institutions. To that end, the two sides signed a win-win business agreement on Oct. 14 last year to cut greenhouse gases and expand renewable energy by using idle land at public institutions.

After a comprehensive review, the province decided to install renewable energy at three sites totaling 5,313 square meters (about 1,607 pyeong). The sites are: ▲ South Gate parking lot of the provincial government office (3,256 square meters) ▲ North parking lot of Hongye Park (894 square meters) ▲ Chungnam Gonggam Maru parking lot (1,163 square meters). Solar power facilities with a total capacity of 1,217 kW will be installed in these areas.

Samsung Display plans to break ground at the South Gate parking lot of the provincial government office at the end of this month, once permits are approved. All related permitting procedures, including the electricity business license, have been completed for the north parking lot of Hongye Park and the Chungnam Gonggam Maru parking lot.

The province said that once the project is completed, Samsung Display will secure a foundation to receive a stable supply of renewable energy for the next 20 years.

A provincial official said, "With this project, we have been able to further strengthen the foundation for expanding renewable energy to achieve carbon neutrality in 2045," and added, "We will continue to spread a renewable energy supply model led by the public sector."
