Police launched an investigation into allegations that Democratic Party of Korea lawmaker Kang Sun-woo took 100 million won.
Police reportedly assigned on the 31st the complaint alleging bribery and other charges against Kang and Seoul City Council member Kim Kyung to the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency's Public Crime Investigation Unit.
Police plan to soon summon the complainant for questioning and then verify the facts of the case.
Kang is suspected of receiving 100 million won from Kim, then a candidate for the Seoul City Council, through aides during the 2022 local election nomination process. In the process, Kang confided the exchange of money to Democratic Party of Korea lawmaker Kim Byung-kee, then the secretary of the nomination management committee, and a recording was reported by a media outlet.
In response, Kim Tae-woo, former Gangseo District head in Seoul from the People Power Party, and the Justice Party filed complaints against them and lawmaker Kim, among others.
Meanwhile, the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency's Public Crime Investigation Unit plans to summon for questioning at 2 p.m. Kim Han-me, head of the civic group Citizens' Action to Establish Judicial Justice, who filed a complaint over lawmaker Kim's "Coupang lunch" allegation.
Ahead of the National Assembly audit in Sep., lawmaker Kim met with Park Dae-jun, then the head of Coupang, and others, sparking allegations that Kim tried to influence personnel decisions regarding a former aide of his who had joined Coupang. Park filed a complaint accusing Kim of obstruction of business by abuse of influence, among other charges.
On Jun. 13, lawmaker Kim was elected floor leader of the Democratic Party, becoming the first floor leader under the Lee Jae-myung administration. However, the day before, Kim resigned midterm with about six months left in the term after successive allegations of abuse of aides and misconduct by family members.
