A man in his 60s was arrested by police in Namhae, South Gyeongsang, on suspicion of setting fire to a village hall because he said he received too little of the community-made kimjang kimchi.
Namhae Police said on the 30th that they requested an arrest warrant for a man in his 60s, identified as A, on suspicion of arson of a public building. A is accused of setting a fire inside a village hall in Gohyeon-myeon, Namhae County, at about 10 a.m. on the 29th.
During the process of dividing kimchi made in the village for kimjang, A said his share was too small, lit a roll of toilet paper, and threw it onto a sofa inside the village hall.
The fire was extinguished in 14 minutes by the fire authorities who responded to a report. Fortunately, there were no casualties, but there was property damage as the interior of the village hall, various furniture, and fixtures were destroyed.
A was arrested at the scene by police. Police are investigating A to determine the exact circumstances of the incident.
