A member of a ring transporting voice phishing crime revenue was threatened with a weapon on the street and had cash stolen.
According to police on the 30th, the Songpa Police Station in Seoul received a report at about 6:55 p.m. on the previous day from B, a Chinese national man in his 20s, that he was robbed of money by A, a man wielding a weapon, in a parking lot in Samjeon-dong, Songpa-gu.
A is believed to have dragged B to a nearby parking lot and threatened him by showing a weapon. B is said to have claimed in the process, "400,000 won in cash and a bag of money of an unknown exact amount were taken."
While analyzing nearby closed-circuit (CC) TV footage, police detected indications that B had taken part in voice phishing and urgently arrested him on suspicion of violating the Act on the Refund of Financial Losses Caused by Telecommunications Fraud. Police also believe the cash B had was criminal funds to be delivered to a voice phishing ring.
B reportedly told police to the effect that "the culprit is another voice phishing member with whom communications had been exchanged before."
