South Chungcheong Province is moving ahead in earnest to build a 50,000-seat "dome stadium," the largest in Korea, near KTX Cheonan-Asan Station.
The province held the first expert advisory meeting on the Cheonan-Asan multipurpose dome stadium on the 29th in the medium conference room at the provincial government building.
About 20 people, including Kim Tae-heum, governor of South Chungcheong Province, and experts in sports marketing, performances, architecture, and urban development, attended the meeting.
The province is pushing to build a 50,000-seat dome stadium. It aims to invest 1 trillion won by 2031 to build it on a 200,000-square-meter site (about 65,000 pyeong) near KTX Cheonan-Asan Station.
Participants at the meeting conducted a preliminary review of key issues such as policy consistency, demand outlook, financing, and operational feasibility for the Cheonan-Asan dome stadium. Experts also offered various opinions related to the dome stadium, including sports, culture and performances, and marketing, and focused discussions on considerations and review directions before moving the project forward.
The province plans to host more than 30 professional baseball games a year at the future Cheonan-Asan dome stadium, and to hold soccer and ice rink games. It will also attract K-pop concerts, exhibitions, and corporate events. Professional baseball games will be coordinated with the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO), and the province will work with major domestic entertainment corporations to host K-pop concerts.
The province plans to launch a feasibility study service related to the dome stadium in Jan. next year. Through this service, it will analyze the site for the dome stadium and research and analyze case studies, financing plans, operation and management plans, and expected effects.
It will then establish a basic plan in the second half of next year and select a project site. It will undergo a preliminary feasibility study in 2027 and pursue approvals in 2028, including detailed design, land compensation, and changes to urban planning facilities. Construction is slated to be completed in 2031.
Governor Kim Tae-heum said, "The multipurpose dome stadium is more than a simple sports facility; it is a comprehensive hub encompassing the sports, culture, and performance industries and a strategic foundation that will drive the regional economy," adding, "We will fully listen to the opinions of experts in each field and faithfully reflect them in future feasibility studies and policy decision-making processes."
