A claim has emerged that the ransomware group believed to have recently attacked Inha University stole about 650 gigabytes (GB) of internal data.
According to Inha University on the 29th, the sender who hacked the university's academic information system the previous day and proposed negotiations by email appeared to be the ransomware group "Gunra." Gunra said through the dark web that it had obtained 650GB of Inha University's internal data and reportedly disclosed part of a list of personal information of university members.
The group previously claimed it hacked Seoul Guarantee Insurance Company and stole internal data, but at the time Seoul Guarantee Insurance Company said there were no indications that a large volume of internal information had been leaked.
At about 6:50 a.m. on the previous day, a ransomware attack caused access disruptions to the main website of Inha University for 14 hours. Inha University reported the situation to the Ministry of Education and the Korea Internet & Security Agency (KISA), and, seeing a possibility of a personal information leak, also filed a report with the Personal Information Protection Commission.
An Inha University official said, "We are checking the facts regarding the claim of internal data theft," and noted, "We are also continuing to investigate the cause of the incident and the scale of the damage."
