Kim Yu-jin, head of the 12·29 Muan Airport Jeju Air passenger plane disaster bereaved families council, said, "The record of the past year is devastating," and "Zero apologies, zero document disclosures, zero detentions of those responsible—the state has not given a proper answer even once to a disaster that claimed 179 lives."
Kim stated accordingly at a memorial on the 29th, the first anniversary of the 12·29 Muan Airport Jeju Air disaster.
Kim said, "There is only one thing the bereaved truly want," adding, "that all 179 people return alive."
Kim continued, "We know that is impossible," and appealed, "so please promise everything but that one thing—everyday care for the bereaved, a guarantee of minimum rights to live, and protection from countless rumors and secondary harm."
Kim also urged an objective investigation by the Aviation and Railway Accident Investigation Board. Kim said, "I hope the upcoming National Assembly inquiry becomes the start of document disclosures and a starting point for shifting to a proper investigation."
Kim added, "What the bereaved want is not special treatment," saying, "an investigation without concealment, participation without exclusion, accountability without exception, and ensuring that such a disaster never happens again."
Kim said, "If accountability for the 12·29 Muan Airport Jeju Air disaster is not properly carried out, the tragedy of this disaster will never end," adding, "the bereaved will not stop until the truth is revealed and those responsible are held to account."
Jeju Air flight 7C 2216, a Boeing 737-800 that departed Bangkok, Thailand, crashed into a localizer embankment while attempting an emergency landing on the runway at Muan Airport at about 9:03 a.m. on Dec. 29 last year. Of the 181 people on board, 179 died.
