In connection with the personal information leak, 3 out of 10 people (32%) picked "criminal prosecution of those responsible" as the appropriate legal action against Coupang.
On Dec. 29, Realmeter said it tallied these results from a survey of 512 people nationwide ages 18 and older conducted on Dec. 26 at the request of the tip team leader. After criminal prosecution of those responsible, "business suspension (29.4%)," "imposition of fines (14.3%)," and "restrictions on new business (6.1%)" followed in response rate.
A total of 67.3% agreed with a call for a full-scale investigation into all criminal and labor cases related to alleged pressure on the investigation into Coupang's severance pay case, more than those who disagreed (22.6%).
Special counsel team Ahn Gwon-seop recently raided Coupang headquarters and Coupang Fulfillment Services (CFS) offices, listing alleged violations of the Severance Pay Act in the warrant. The thrust is that Coupang failed to fulfill its obligation to pay severance within 14 days after a worker leaves.
Regarding criticism that Coupang founder Bom Kim, the chair of Coupang Inc., is "evading social responsibility by invoking U.S. citizenship," 69.1% of respondents agreed.
As for the chair's inappropriate conduct, the most common response, at 23.3%, was "an attitude that seems to downplay the rights of Korean consumers and the application of domestic law by invoking a U.S. corporate structure." The response rate for "seeming to avoid responsibility by putting forward the head of the Korean unit despite being the de facto controlling shareholder" was also 22.5%.
Next were: ▲ a posture that seems to focus on lobbying U.S. politicians rather than handling the fallout from the incident, 18.6% ▲ controversies such as alleged orders to destroy evidence and alleged cover-up of death from overwork, 13.5% ▲ notice of nonattendance at a National Assembly hearing citing a global management schedule, 6.5%.
Due to the recent controversy, 26.1% of respondents said they are "considering leaving Coupang's service." A total of 18.5% said "I have not left yet, but I plan to reduce how often I use it," and 16.1% answered "I have already completed withdrawal."
This survey was conducted using an automated response random digit dialing (RDD) method based on a wireless (100%) randomly generated sampling frame. The response rate was 4.4%, with a margin of error of ±4.3 percentage points at a 95% confidence level.
