Hwang Hana, 37, who fled overseas after facing drug charges and was arrested, has been detained. Hwang is the granddaughter of the founder of Namyang Dairy Products.
According to legal sources on the 26th, Seo Hyo-jin, a warrant judge at the Anyang branch of the Suwon District Court, issued an arrest warrant the same day for Hwang on charges of violating the Act on the Control of Narcotics. After holding a pretrial detention hearing, Seo said there was a risk of evidence destruction.
Hwang is suspected of injecting methamphetamine into two people, including an acquaintance, in Gangnam, Seoul, in July 2023. Hwang has served time multiple times on charges including drug use. After coming under police investigation, Hwang left for Thailand in December that year. In May last year, police asked Interpol for a blue notice to locate Hwang and invalidated the passport. Hwang is said to have subsequently entered Cambodia illegally.
Recently, through an attorney, Hwang expressed an intention to turn herself in to police. On the 24th, police arrested Hwang aboard a national carrier at Phnom Penh Ta Cho International Airport in Cambodia. Hwang reportedly denied the allegations during questioning. Investigators who secured custody plan to continue probing how Hwang obtained methamphetamine and the circumstances of its use.
