The special counsel team investigating allegations of quashing a probe into Coupang and of unpaid severance pay is conducting searches and seizures of Coupang for the second day in a row.
The special counsel team said that, following the previous day, on the 24th it sent prosecutors and investigators from the morning to Coupang's headquarters in Songpa-gu, Seoul, and to the Coupang Fulfillment Services office to secure materials related to the payment of retirement funds.
Earlier, the special counsel team searched and seized Coupang's headquarters, Coupang Fulfillment Services, and an office near Gangnam Station in Seoul known as the "Coupang secret office."
Around 10:10 a.m. the previous day, the special counsel team searched and seized Coupang Fulfillment Services and the secret office. From about 1:30 p.m., it executed a search and seizure warrant for former CFS CEO Eom Seong-hwan, and from about 2 p.m., for Coupang's headquarters. The searches and seizures of the secret office and the former CEO Eom concluded the previous day.
The special counsel team listed former CEO Eom as a suspect on the warrant on charges of violating the Act on the Guarantee of Employees' Retirement Benefits. The special counsel team is currently investigating allegations that in May 2023 Coupang changed its work rules to the disadvantage of employees and withheld payments in the nature of severance pay. The special counsel team plans to analyze the evidence secured through the searches and seizures and then summon related parties for questioning.
