At an underground construction site for the double-track Shinansan Line near Yeouido Station in Seoul, rebar collapsed, and one worker was found in cardiac arrest.
According to police and others on the 18th, the Yeongdeungpo Police Station in Seoul received a report at 1:22 p.m. that "rebar collapsed and a person was crushed" at the Shinansan Line underpass construction site in front of Exit 2 of Yeouido Station on Subway Line 5.
According to fire authorities, rebar fell during a concrete pour, causing the accident. The accident reportedly occurred about 70 meters underground.
Among them, a man in his 50s was found in cardiac arrest and was taken to a hospital while receiving cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). The man has reportedly regained breathing at the hospital and is recovering.
Another man in his 50s suffered a minor ankle injury and was taken to a hospital. A foreign worker in his 30s exited to the surface on his own and received on-site treatment for an abrasion on his wrist.
Police and fire authorities reportedly deployed 76 vehicles and 292 personnel to carry out the rescue.
Police plan to question the rescued workers and the developer to determine whether there were any safety deficiencies during the work.
Because of the accident, some traffic is being controlled on the road from National Assembly Station toward Saetgang Station in Yeouido-dong, Yeongdeungpo District. Yeongdeungpo District sent a safety alert text message at 2:13 p.m. asking drivers to take detours.
