Police investigating allegations that political figures received money and valuables from the Unification Church have launched another raid on the special counsel investigating Kim Keon-hee.
From the morning of the 16th, the Korean National Police Agency's special task force has been executing a search warrant by sending investigators to the office of Special Counsel Min Joong-ki's team at KT Gwanghwamun Building West in Jongno District, Seoul. The raid was reported to be aimed at obtaining additional Unification Church-related investigative materials that were not secured the previous day.
The previous day, police raided 10 locations over about 15 hours, including the Unification Church's Cheon Jeong Gung in Gapyeong, Gyeonggi; the Unification Church's Seoul headquarters in Yongsan District, Seoul; and the detention cells at Seoul Detention Center for President Han Hak-ja and former global headquarters chief Yoon Young-ho. They are said to have secured reports and accounting records from around 2018.
Police have been accelerating the investigation since receiving the case from the special counsel team on the 10th. Former headquarters chief Yoon previously told the special counsel team that the Unification Church approached and provided money and valuables to figures not only in the People Power Party but also in the Democratic Party.
On the 17th, police plan to visit Seoul Detention Center to attempt an interview investigation with President Han in connection with the allegations that political figures received money and valuables. President Han has been booked as a suspect on charges of bribery and violating the Political Funds Act.
