Dongduk Women's University, which is pursuing a shift to coeducation in 2029, plans to change its name to Dongduk University, among other options.
On the 15th, at the auditorium of the Centennial Memorial Hall on campus, Dongduk Women's University held a "Dongduk Women's University development plan briefing" and told students, faculty and staff, and alumni that as part of its plan to transition to coeducation, it plans to change the school name to Dongduk University, among other options.
Earlier, President Kim Myeong-ae said on the 3rd that the school would transition to coeducation starting in 2029. This follows a recommendation for coeducation by the Committee for Deliberation on Coeducation Transition, which was formed in June to discuss the issue.
Dongduk Women's University plans to recruit new students for all undergraduate and graduate programs without gender distinction. Currently, it admits male students only in the graduate school and the Korean language and culture major.
Students at Dongduk Women's University oppose the transition to coeducation. According to the student council, of the 3,470 people who voted on the coeducation transition, 2,975 (85.7%) opposed the move. Support came from 280 (8.1%), with 147 abstentions (4.2%) and 68 invalid votes (2%).
