The body of the last worker buried in the collapse at the construction site for a new public library in Gwangju was recovered on the 13th. All four workers who were buried in the accident were recovered, but all died.
According to the Gwangju Fire and Safety Headquarters and others on the 13th, the last buried person, identified as A, was found around 11:20 a.m. near the basement level 1. The fire authorities then recovered the body at about 12:28 p.m.
A was the last victim buried in this accident. At about 1:58 p.m. on the 11th, a collapse occurred at the construction site for the representative library on the site of the former Sangmu incineration plant in Chipyeong-dong, Seo District, Gwangju, burying a total of four people, all of whom died.
Earlier, around 1:03 a.m. that day, a worker in his 60s, identified as B, was found at the collapse site of the Gwangju representative library in Chipyeong-dong, Seo District, Gwangju. A had already died, and firefighters recovered B.
The first rescued person, identified as C, was found around 2:19 p.m. on the day of the accident and taken to a nearby hospital but was pronounced dead. Then, the second rescued person, identified as D, was also rescued at 8:14 p.m. on the same day, about four hours after being found at 3:53 p.m., but died.
Fire authorities struggled with search and rescue operations after the accident. Heavy tangled rebar at the scene, uncured concrete, and steel structures leaning at an angle posed numerous hazards. As a result, search and rescue work was suspended at 9 a.m. on the 12th.
