Director General Prosecutor Moon Ji-seok, who exposed the alleged outside pressure to drop charges over Coupang's severance pay case, appeared before Ahn Kwon-seop's standing special prosecutor team on the 11th.
Appearing for questioning that day, Director General Prosecutor Moon told reporters, "I hope the standing special counsel uncovers the whole truth," and said, "Any public officials who even slightly lie or have done wrong must be held strictly accountable."
Director General Prosecutor Moon said that day he would submit all case-related materials to the special counsel. Director General Prosecutor Moon explained, "After I was questioned by the Supreme Prosecutors' Office on May 8, there was no additional summons request, so I am only now able to submit all the materials."
Earlier, the Bucheon Branch of the Central Regional Employment and Labor Office referred Coupang to prosecutors in January with a recommendation to indict over unpaid severance pay at Coupang's logistics subsidiary, Coupang Fulfillment Services (CFS). But the Bucheon Branch of the Incheon District Prosecutors' Office decided in April not to indict, citing no charges.
Director General Prosecutor Moon Ji-seok, who investigated the case, revealed at the National Assembly's Environment and Labor Committee audit on Oct. 10 that his superiors—then Branch Chief Um Hee-jun and then Deputy Chief Prosecutor Kim Dong-hee—exerted pressure to clear Coupang of charges.
Justice Minister Jung Sung-ho said an independent third body needed to uncover the facts and decided on an investigation by a standing special counsel. The special counsel led by Ahn Kwon-seop opened its investigation on the 6th.
