More than 200 phishing reports have been filed in the 10 days since Coupang announced a large-scale personal data leak.
According to materials Democratic Party of Korea lawmaker Lee Jeong-heon received from the Korean National Police Agency on the 11th, 229 phishing cases related to the Coupang incident were reported from on the 30th to on the 9th.
There were many cases in which scammers impersonated Coupang to trick victims by promising compensation for damages, or by posing as parcel deliveries. In addition, techniques used before the personal data leak, such as claiming selection for the Coupang review trial group or winning a Coupang event, were repeated.
Coupang reported to the Personal Information Protection Commission on the 20th that an incident occurred exposing 4,500 customer records, but on the 29th of the same month it revised the figure, saying 33.7 million customer accounts were exposed.
The Korean National Police Agency's integrated response unit for telecom and financial fraud said, "Secondary damage is a concern due to smishing and voice phishing exploiting the Coupang incident," urging caution.
It also said, "If you receive a text containing an unknown link, delete it immediately, and if someone approaches you by impersonating an institution from an unknown number, hang up and report it to Coupang's official customer center or to the integrated response unit."
