A man arrested on suspicion of setting fire to the outer wall of the National Assembly in Yeouido, Yeongdeungpo-gu, Seoul, was identified as a civilian employee of the military.
The Yeongdeungpo Police Station in Seoul said on the 10th that a man in his 30s, identified only as A, who was arrested on arson charges, was confirmed to be a civilian employee of the military and was handed over to the military.
A was accused of starting a fire around 8:10 p.m. on the 9th near Gate 3 of the National Assembly building. A used a torch to ignite fallen leaves piled next to the wall. The act was reportedly carried out out of dissatisfaction with the domestic political situation.
Fire authorities deployed 16 vehicles and 63 personnel and completely extinguished the blaze around 8:25 p.m. The fire burned about 30㎡, including the surrounding lawn and wall. No casualties were reported.
