Police in Korea and Cambodia jointly raided a criminal compound in Cambodia, rescued a Korean man in his 20s who had been confined, and arrested more than 50 members of the organization.
According to the Korean National Police Agency on the 10th, the "Korea task force," where Korean and Cambodian police officers work together, apprehended 51 Koreans who were committing scam (fraud) crimes the day before at a criminal compound in Sihanoukville. They also rescued a Korean man in his 20s who had been subjected to confinement and torture.
The operation deployed five Korean police officers from the Korea task force, nine Cambodian police officers, more than 100 members of the Cambodian police special forces, and agents from Korea's National Intelligence Service.
The Korea task force had been investigating based on a 112 report on the 4th that a Korean man in his 20s was being confined and tortured. They said they were able to take down the organization at once by identifying the anticipated escape routes in advance.
The "rapid dispatch procedure" recently agreed upon by Korean and Cambodian police was also activated. Once an emergency is confirmed, Cambodian police can be dispatched with only location information and personal details. Previously, even after receiving a report of confinement, local police demanded stringent conditions such as the informant's facial photos and videos, making rescues difficult.
The Korean National Police Agency said, "This operation was a large-scale joint rescue and arrest operation in which the Korea task force and police from both countries participated together, from protecting nationals overseas to arresting a large criminal organization."
