In a campuswide vote conducted by the Dongduk Women's University student council, a majority of respondents said they oppose converting to a coeducational system. The results are scheduled to be formally delivered to the school later this afternoon.
According to the university community on the 9th, the student council held offline voting from the 3rd until 7:30 p.m. on the 8th under the title "Survey of 8,000 Dongduk members on the conversion to coeducation," with turnout exceeding a majority at 50.4%. Of the total 3,470 students, 2,975 (85.7%) opposed converting to coeducation, 280 (8.1%) supported it, 147 (4.2%) abstained, and 68 (2%) were invalid.
At 2 p.m. today, the student council plans to hold a press conference at the main gate of the campus, urge the school to actively reflect student opinions in the discussions on converting to coeducation, and then deliver the voting results.
Meanwhile, the school said on its website on the 8th that "this public deliberation process, which reflects professors, students, staff, and alumni in a 1:1:1:1 ratio, is a democratic attempt to allow all members to participate equally." It also said, "For some students to deny the procedure itself because the outcome differs from the recommendation is to fail to respect mutually agreed matters."
The school plans to hold a briefing on Dongduk Women's University's development plan at 2 p.m. on the 15th, an event that President Kim Myeong-ae previewed when releasing a statement on coeducation on the 3rd of this month.
