A class-action lawsuit targeting Coupang's U.S. headquarters is being pursued over Coupang's large-scale personal data leak.
On the 8th, according to legal sources, SJKP, the U.S. law firm that is the local affiliate of Korea-based law firm Daeryun, plans to file a punitive damages lawsuit against Coupang in a U.S. court. At 1:30 p.m. on the 8th local time in Manhattan, New York, it plans to hold a press conference on the matter. Some plaintiffs have already been recruited, and additional plaintiffs will be recruited through the press conference, it said.
Earlier, on the 29th, Coupang said information from about 33.7 million Korea customer accounts was leaked. The leaked personal data includes names, emails, phone numbers, addresses, and some order information.
Coupang's Korea unit is 100% owned by the parent company, Coupang Inc., which is listed in the United States. More than 70% of the voting rights of the parent company are held by founder Bom Kim, chair of the Coupang Inc. board. Kim is a U.S. citizen.
