Choo Kyung-ho of the People Power Party said on the 7th that the special counsel on insurrection had indicted him on charges of engaging in an important duty related to insurrection, adding, "I will clearly prove that the insurrection charge pinned on me is a fabrication."
Choo said in a statement issued after the special counsel's indictment that day, "Even though the request for a detention warrant was dismissed because the special counsel failed to substantiate the charge, they pushed ahead with a political indictment without any additional evidence."
Choo said, "From the very launch of the special counsel, the conclusion was already set, and they forced the charges to fit and pushed ahead with an unreasonable indictment," adding, "The special counsel and the Democratic Party of Korea must stop further political oppression and intimidation of the judiciary."
Choo said, "Even at the substantive review of the detention warrant, the special counsel acknowledged that I had no prior collusion with former President Yoon Suk-yeol regarding martial law," adding, "At the time, I also did not receive any request from former President Yoon during a phone call to help maintain martial law."
Earlier, Choo, who was the floor leader last year when emergency martial law was declared, is suspected of having received a request from former President Yoon Suk-yeol's side to cooperate with martial law and then obstructing other lawmakers' participation in the vote to lift martial law by repeatedly changing the location of the party caucus.
In response, the special counsel requested an arrest warrant for Choo on the 3rd of last month. However, after holding a pre-arrest suspect questioning (substantive warrant review) on the 2nd, the court dismissed it.
