A group that paid with counterfeit 50,000-won bills at restaurants and convenience stores and pocketed change was caught by police.
According to police on the 3rd, the Icheon Police Station in Gyeonggi on this day arrested and sent three people, including a person in their 20s identified as A, to the prosecution on charges of acquiring and using counterfeit currency.
A and others are accused of going around a total of 12 places, including restaurants and convenience stores in Icheon, Gyeonggi, and nearby areas in the early morning on the 13th, paying with counterfeit 50,000-won bills and taking the change.
Police launched an investigation after receiving successive reports from victims suspecting counterfeit bills, identified the vehicle A and others used in the crime through CCTV, and arrested them all in Daejeon.
It is known that the victims realized the damage only later because it was late at night and they did not think customers would pay with counterfeit bills.
The investigation found that A and others committed the crime while in possession of 20 counterfeit 50,000-won bills. Police said that to the naked eye they looked so similar that it was hard to distinguish them from genuine bills.
A police official said, "When A and others were arrested, we confiscated four counterfeit bills they had and secured eight from victims," adding, "The remaining counterfeit bills are presumed to have been circulated in the market."
