Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon on the morning of the 28th attended the "Salvation Army Red Kettle opening ceremony" held at Gwanghwamun Square in Seoul, signaling the start of the fundraising drive and donating.
Oh said, "At the very top of the Seoul Metropolitan Government's vision system, 'Seoul, a special city of companionship and charm,' is companionship with the vulnerable," adding, "Even if the city works hard to support the vulnerable with its budget, blind spots are bound to exist."
He went on, "A Bible verse comes to mind that says to love not with words or speech but with sincerity and in action," and said, "I sincerely hope that more funds are raised this year so that a warm light reaches more people."
The Salvation Army Red Kettle began in Britain in the 1800s, and in Korea, fundraising has been held every year since 1928. This year marks the 97th year.
The Salvation Army launches its fundraising with the Red Kettle opening ceremony and collects donations through Dec. 31, the last day of the year.
