As a deadly fire at a Hong Kong apartment complex caused large-scale casualties, stars in Korea's pop music scene joined in support.
Girl group aespa said on its official Weibo, "Regarding the heartbreaking news, we express our deep condolences," and added, "In the name of aespa, we have decided to donate 500,000 Hong Kong dollars (about 90 million won) to the Hong Kong Red Cross Society of China. We hope we can contribute even a little and pray for everyone's peace."
SM Entertainment on the day decided to donate 1 million Hong Kong dollars (about 190 million won) to the Hong Kong Red Cross Society of China for firefighting, relief efforts, and supplies support. Group RIIZE also decided to donate 250,000 Hong Kong dollars (about 50 million won).
Group RIIZE said on its official Weibo, "We felt extremely heavy-hearted upon hearing the grievous news," and added, "In the name of RIIZE and 'BRIIZE' (the fandom name), we have decided to donate 250,000 Hong Kong dollars to the Hong Kong Red Cross Society of China. We will add our modest strength to help rescue operations and follow-up support. We hope everyone will be safe."
Chinese-speaking stars also expressed their sorrow on social media. Jackson of group GOT7 posted information on major shelters in urban Hong Kong on his social media, saying, "Please share this post," and, "This is what is happening in Hong Kong." Jackson, who is from Hong Kong, said, "Please pass this along so that all people and animals in need can receive proper relief."
Yuqi, the Chinese member of girl group (G)I-DLE, also wrote in Chinese on her social media the same day, "I hope everyone is safe."
The fire broke out at about 2:52 p.m. on the 31-story residential high-rise apartment complex "Wong Fuk Court" in the Tai Po area of northern Hong Kong on the previous day. As of 6 p.m. that day, the fire left at least 55 dead and more than 200 missing, and the fire authorities were continuing the search.
