A baby of a Japanese couple who had been receiving treatment after a taxi driven by a driver in his 70s crossed the centerline and crashed into an oncoming car has died.
According to police on the 25th, the 9-month-old daughter of a Japanese couple in their 20s who were in the taxi involved in a traffic accident on a road in Yongsan District at about 7 p.m. on the 21st died on the 19th.
In the accident, the baby lost consciousness and was taken to a hospital. The Japanese couple riding in the taxi suffered fractures.
The driver, identified only as A, is suspected of crossing the centerline on a road in Yongsan District and colliding with a passenger car coming from the opposite direction.
A initially claimed sudden unintended acceleration, but is said to have told police in a statement that indicated A pressed the wrong pedal. No signs of drugs or alcohol were found for A.
The Yongsan Police Station, which is investigating the case, changed A's charge from injury to death by traffic accident under the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Settlement of Traffic Accidents in accordance with the baby's death and it is under investigation.
A police official said, "We are currently conducting an investigation and are reviewing an application for an arrest warrant."
