On Udo in Jeju, a van driven by a tourist in their 60s plowed forward, killing three tourists and injuring 10.
According to Jeju Eastern Police Station and others, at about 2:47 p.m. on the 24th at Cheonjin Port in Udo-myeon, Jeju City, a Staria rental car driven by A, 62, sped forward for about 150 meters after accelerating and slammed into a large road sign pole next to the ferry terminal waiting room.
In the crash, three people died: a woman in her 60s who was in the van, a man in his 70s who was walking, and a man in his 60s. In addition, 10 people, including A, suffered serious and minor injuries and were taken to hospitals. The van involved in the accident was reportedly carrying six people in total, including the driver.
After arriving at Cheonjin Port, the van exited the ferry, made a left turn, then immediately went straight at high speed and struck people walking on the road. It reportedly stopped after crashing into the road sign pole next to the waiting room.
A police investigation found that A was not under the influence of alcohol at the time. Police are investigating the detailed cause of the accident through witness statements and checks of on-site closed-circuit (CC) TV.
The National Forensic Service plans to examine the vehicle on Udo on the morning of the 25th to investigate whether there was sudden unintended acceleration and the driver's control inputs.
