An active-duty soldier on leave caused a disturbance at a sauna and assaulted a responding police officer.
According to police on the 19th, active-duty Army soldier A was arrested in the act on charges including obstruction of official duties for assaulting a responding police officer at a sauna in Seodaemun-gu, Seoul, at about 5 a.m. on the 16th.
Police were dispatched after receiving a report that A and another soldier, B, were arguing and throwing a cell phone. When officers woke A, who was lying inside the sauna, to hear an explanation, A punched and kicked the officer, it was found. In the process, the injured officer reportedly suffered a cut above the eyebrow, among other injuries.
A witness said, "It seemed (A) was drunk." However, whether alcohol was actually involved was not confirmed.
Police confirmed that A is an active-duty soldier and transferred the case to the Army Investigation Command. The Army Investigation Command plans to investigate the detailed circumstances of the incident.
