A man in his 50s was taken into custody by police on suspicion of damaging military facilities, including a vehicle-control fence installed at Unification Bridge in Paju, Gyeonggi.
According to the military and police on the 19th, a report came in at about 9:47 p.m. on the 18th from the south gate of Unification Bridge in Munsan-eup, Paju, that "a man is walking around kicking the 'No entry' vehicle-control fence."
Responding officers confirmed that a man in his 50s, identified as A, had damaged military facilities and arrested A at the scene on suspicion of violating the Protection of Military Bases and Installations Act.
After driving his own vehicle to the south gate of Unification Bridge, A is believed to have caused a disturbance, shouting "I want to go to North Korea" despite the military's attempts to stop A.
A is a South Korean national, not a North Korean defector, and was not under the influence of alcohol. A reportedly told police to the effect that, "Work hasn't been going well lately, and it happened while driving."
Police are investigating A to determine the exact circumstances of the incident.
