Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Jae-yong is expected to attend the naval officer commissioning ceremony of his eldest son, Lee Ji-ho (24).
According to the business community on the 14th, Lee is said to be attending the completion and commissioning ceremony for Class 139 Navy officer candidates, to be held on the 28th at the Naval Academy in Jinhae, Changwon, South Gyeongsang Province, under the auspices of the chief of naval operations.
Lee did not attend Lee's enlistment ceremony as an officer candidate on Sept. 15. The enlistment ceremony was reportedly attended by his mother, Daesang Holdings Vice Chairman Lim Se-ryung, and his younger sister, Won-ju.
Meanwhile, Lee enlisted as a Class 139 Navy bachelor's degree officer candidate, completed 11 weeks of officer education and training, and will be commissioned as a Navy second lieutenant on Nov. 28. Second lieutenant is the lowest of the three company-grade officer ranks. Lee is said to be commissioned as a Navy interpreter officer. The total length of military service, including the training period and the mandatory service period of 36 months after commissioning, is 39 months.
Born in 2000 in the United States and holding dual citizenship in Korea and the United States, Lee renounced U.S. citizenship to fulfill military service as a naval officer. In the business community, this drew evaluations of "noblesse oblige in action."
