A video from the time of the crash has been released after a truck plowed through Jeil Market in Bucheon, Gyeonggi, leaving 20 people dead or injured.
In the video released on the 13th by a Jeil Market vendor, people walking along the market corridor are seen hurriedly taking cover inside shops. Moments later, a blue 1-ton (t) truck speeds through. Some people fell while narrowly dodging out of the way.
At around 10:55 a.m. that day, the truck charged forward, killing two women in their 70s and injuring 18 people. Of the 18 injured, nine were classified as critical or emergency patients, and the other nine as having minor injuries.
Choi Gwon-muk (68), who called 119, said, "Some customers really dodged it by a hair," and noted, "I was out of breath, stammering into the receiver as I called."
The truck driver is A, a merchant in his 60s at Jeil Market. Fire authorities believe the truck reversed about 28 meters inside the market, then sped for 150 meters, causing the crash.
Police urgently arrested A on suspicion of causing death or injury under the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Settlement of Traffic Accidents and is under investigation. After receiving A's urine sample, police said no alcohol level was detected. Police plan to focus on the possibility of pedal misapplication and determine the exact cause of the crash.
