Police have concluded there is no suspicion against former lawmaker Yun Mi-hyang, who was accused of violating the National Security Act for attending an event hosted by the General Association of Korean Residents in Japan (Chongryon).
According to police and others on the 12th, the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency's Second Security Investigation Division decided on the 7th not to refer the case, judging there was no suspicion in the National Security Act violation case involving the former lawmaker.
On Sept. 1, 2023, the former lawmaker attended, without prior reporting, a memorial service for the massacre of Koreans during the Great Kanto Earthquake hosted by Chongryon and was then accused by conservative-leaning civic groups. Chongryon is a pro-North Korean residents' group in Japan and, under Supreme Court precedent, is classified as an anti-state organization under the National Security Act that bans praise, incitement, meetings, and communications.
However, police determined that, based on the video of the scene at the time along with other evidence and statements, it is difficult to see that the former lawmaker met with or contacted Chongryon.
